Bratton family papers, 1764-1983.

Correspondence, financial records, and other papers, chiefly of John Simpson Bratton (1819-1888), his wife Harriett Rainey Bratton (1826-1912) and their family in York District, S.C., documenting family farming and business interests from Colonial, antebellum, Civil War, Reconstruction and the 20th century eras. Topics represented includes records of household expenses and plantation operations; land papers and holdings of real estate; names and family groupings of African American slaves; mercantile interests, service on the Board of Commissioners of Roads, Bridges, and Ferries of York District; and business interests in the firm of Bratton & Rainey, the Southern Life Insurance Co., and railroad stock; correspondence of various officials in S.C., North Carolina, and Tennessee with Mrs. R.M. Bratton re planning for the Sesqui-Centennial celebration of the Battle of King's Mountain observances held 7 Oct. 1930; correspondence of various officials concerning the the Battleship South Carolina, efforts to secure return of the silver service designed and manufactured by the Gorham Company in 1910, and attempts to have another ship bear the same name. Printed, illustrated letterhead envelopes document many agriculture-related businesses in S.C. and elsewhere; other visual material includes postcards, ca. early 20th century; and genealogical information on the family (all in Box 7 - lettersize); receipts, ca. 1870 and undated (Box 8) Other papers include a sketch of Brattonsville; travel letters of family members on a European tour; and genealogical material on the Bratton, Rainey, and Witherspoon families. Persons represented include the brothers, James Rufus Bratton and John S. Bratton, Jr., especially concerning the Ku Klux Klan activities (1871-1878) and Reconstruction.
